Wed, Dec 03 at 07:15 PM
Amazon is taking opportunity of Thanksgiving day by releasing the bad news of shutting one of its web service i.e. Alexa Web Search. ...Alexas web search engine. Introduced in 2006, the service is already closed to new customers but the existing users can utilize it till January 26, 2009.

Amazon has mentioned in its mail sent to developers that the reason of closing the service is its low usage. Most of us agree with the point as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft offer more competent services. On the Alexa Web Search site, you will find Amazon saying that the service has been deprecated.
Enhanced Google Street Views
Wed, Dec 03 at 07:15 PM
Google recently announced that it has made some enhancements for the Street View. Now you dont have to scroll to the rightmost corner of the map for clicking on Street view. A single click at Googles pegmen and putting it up on the map will do the whole job. The moment you will do this, street view will get activated.

Google has also introduced a mini map on the bottom right hand corner, which will enable you to see the map while having a look at the street view. Introduction of a scroll wheel enabled mice and navigation controlling arrows at the upper left hand corner of the map will make the navigation bit easier.
Users now have the option of reporting the images by clicking on the report a concern link that will be visible on all the images. Do you think that Google is taking feedback from users by making them fill this form? If you also want Google to know what else you want, do click on the link and provide more insights.
New Features for Live Search Webmaster Center
Wed, Dec 03 at 07:15 PM
The Live Search team has come out with a lot of new features for the Webmaster Center. So if by any how, you are using this Microsoft service aside from......Google Webmaster Central, then you would surely like these new additions. If not, then read on as you might like it and start using the Webmaster Center from now on.

The first and perhaps the most important of them all is the Webmaster Center's malware detection procedure
The feature is helpful in detecting whether the webpages and the webpages the site links to, are infected with malwares or not. If any kind of malwares are detected, then it will immediately flag the links and will let you know in your next search results about the detection of malwares in the links. In addition to it, one can also download detailed reports of malware detection and the information about the ways to fix the problem.
The other two new features are:
Simplified authentication: You can use one authentication code per user account to authenticate multiple websites.
The outbound links tool: This tool enables you to filter those links which points to sites with malwares.
New York Times on Google
Wed, Dec 03 at 07:15 PM
The New York Times has a longer article on censorship of and through Google around the world. (Note as opposed to what you might understand......from the article, not all countries censorship requests are forwarded to Chilling Effects. We do not post removals from Google.cn on Chilling Effects because the Chinese government does not send written removal requests to Google, Google once told me... without clarifying just how they communicate with the Chinese government on this. Also note that in regards to the Holocaust-denial content removal, as far as we can tell some removals have been on a global level, not just for Germany.)
Yahoo! and Virgin Media Going Mobile
Wed, Dec 03 at 07:15 PM
British Telecommunications leader Virgin Media announced it will use Yahoo oneSearch for providing internet exploration facilities to its mobile customers. In a release, Graeme Oxby, MD Virgin Mobile said, The new Virgin Media mobile portal will bring the web to its consumers pockets. Users will have an access to all the information when Virgin will integrate Yahoo! oneSearch into the portal.
California Internet Firms technology will be used for delivering news, games, videos, music, entertainment and online search facilities to those using Virgin mobile internet connections.
It is also said that the content of oneSearch is customized for mobile use by minimizing the links followed to reach desired content as well as by formatting the internet pages for screens of mobile. This means that a search made on the name of a film will show pages with movie timings at cinemas as well as reviews and details of cast of the film.
California based Yahoo, which was facing a strong competition for Internet advertising colossus Google, is now focusing hard on getting advertisers by targeting mobile customers.
Mitch Lazar, MD, Connected Life Europe- Yahoo said, Virgin Media and Yahoo are together trying to enhance the mobile internet experience in UK as well as creating the opportunities for advertisers to easily reach audience of mobile consumers.

Top Ask.com Questions
Wed, Dec 03 at 07:15 PM
Wonder what we as a group think about, worry about, and are curious about? Ask.com names the top searches of the year. 2008 was a year of worries about gas prices and the economy. We sought out deals on vacations, used cars, and cheap apartments. Ask.com, the 7th largest search engine in the US gets 70 million unique monthly searches, according to comScore Media Metrix.
Top Ask.com Questions
Last year we had different things on our minds, and the categories of queries has changed. Still, the #1 search last year for politicians during the primaries is now president elect Barack Obama.
The famous celebrity moms who captured our attention was a pregnant Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba, a young and pregnant Jamie Lynn Spears, and a perky politician most of us hadnt heard of until this year: Sarah Palin.
We go to search engines to learn about life. Questions we might have asked our mothers or grandparents, we now type into that search box on a web page. And search engines are how many of us make a living.
It was an election year, and there are hints of that in the top searches, but not many. This year we wanted to know these things pertaining to our private lives, our work life, and our financial life:
1. How do I get pregnant?
2. How do I lose weight?
3. How do I write a resume?
4. How much is minimum wage?
5. How much is my car worth?
6. How do I change my name?
7. What is the meaning of life?
8. How do I register to vote?
9. Why is the sky blue?
10. How do I download videos?
I guess parents have been asked why the sky is blue, and went to ask.com to ask for the answer. In case you also wonder, here is ask.coms answer:
The suns rays hit the Earths atmosphere, where the light is scattered by nitrogen and oxygen molecules in the air. The blue wavelength of this light is affected more than the red and green wavelengths, causing the surrounding air to appear blue. At sunset, the suns light passes farther through the atmosphere, deflecting and decreasing the blue in the air. Scattering by dust particles and pollution in the air causes the sunset to appear red.
Now, what about the meaning of life? Search engines are one big Dear Abby. Surprisingly, the meaning of life is not the domain of religions, at least on search engines. There are no paid search ads from churches, but plenty of philosophies on Ask.com.
Interestingly, Google has a few more links from religious sources and some paid ads from churches. Whatever the answer, its an interesting question for a search engine.

After a Black Friday blackout, Live Search is giving clarifications about the glitch and has also come up with a new update: Instant Cashback.

Cashback was not working for more thanthree hours last Friday and Live Search explained as to why all this happened:
A significant spike in traffic caused the system to go down for several hours on Friday
The downtime was partly related to investigating the issue and partly to rebuilding and redeploying the databases and indexes that support Microsoft Live Search cashback.
The issues that caused Friday's problem have been resolved. We're confident we won't have further problems.
Contact Live Search support if you have any kind of queries related to Live Search. The new Instant Cashback is available via PayPal if you are an eBay user.

Dismissed Lawsuit Against Google and Yahoo
Wed, Dec 03 at 07:15 PM
According to a MediaPost report, a California court has dismissed a lawsuit against Google and Yahoo for displaying gambling ads in their search results. The California Superior Court Judge, Richard Kramer, has granted immunity from liability based on the federal Communications Decency Act (CDA) to search engines.
Section 230 of the CDA says that operators of Internet services (in this case, search engines) are not to be held liable for words of third parties who use their services (i.e. AdWords). What isnt immediately clear (to me, anyway) is whether or not the sites that advertise on Google and Yahoo can face legal action (assuming they were based in the U.S.).
According to Judge Kramer, because Google and Yahoo had already stopped accepting gambling ads in the U.S., there was no reason to issue an injunction. The lawsuit had dated back to 2004 when Google and Yahoo were sued by two California residents who had reportedly lost $100,000 gambling online. Im glad to see that even after people turn 16 they still refuse to take responsibility for themselves.
Microsoft, Google and Yahoo paid $31.5 million last year to settle with the Justice Department for their promotion of gambling sites within the U.S. The CDA did not protect them in that case because the law contains an exception for some federal criminal cases (translation"you arent protected if it is the government who benefits).
Spam Algorithm Classifier Fixed for iFrames
Wed, Dec 03 at 07:15 PM
A lot of discussions has been going on at the official Google thread where a very interesting response from Matt Cutts of Google was noticed, where......he tried to explain about a bug in Google's algorithm for detecting, that is what is believed to be, a kind of spam due to an IFrame.
The site concerned here is atlasshrugs.com and Matt Cutts said:
Hi, we looked into this, and the blog in question was ranking lower in our search results because of an algorithmic error that has now been fixed; the site's drop in our search results had nothing to do with the views expressed on the site. Essentially, our search algorithm saw a large area on the blog that was due to an IFRAME included from another site and that looked spammy to our automatic classifier. I believe that this bug has been fixed now. We also added additional safety checks to the relevant system that would escalate to an engineer if this site had the same issue in the future.
The site should be ranking higher in Google within 24 hours according to the people that I talked to. Thanks for mentioning the site on this discussion group to give us feedback"I appreciate it.
Usually it has been noticed that it is very rare to find Matt in various discussions like Google Groups thread and reply, so when this news was published, it was hard to ignore it.
Matt explained later on, "we adjusted the algorithm in question to make more robust, so the change also benefits any other sites there were affected." Thanks to Barry for noticing it!
For more details, check out the Google Groups thread.

Hot on the heels of their SEO guide, Google have released a new round of tips aimed at bloggers. They've created a one page document in their help area under the category "creating a Google friendly site" to specifically help bloggers.
Whether you're an existing blog owner, or looking to start, the guide will give you advice straight from the horse's mouth on how to improve your site. I've included most of the key points below:
Create interesting and compelling content
•Write well and often. A frequently updated blog encourages people to return
•Follow Google's webmaster guidelines, just like any site owner
•Add labels and tags to your content to make it easier to find
•Make it easy to find. Consider hosting it on your regular site, eg: www.example.com/blog
•Limit comment spam
•If you are promoting affiliate programs, make sure to add lots of valuable content
Make it easy for search engine users and spiders to find your blog
•Use descriptive titles with relevant keywords as this will help to provide search engines information about the content on your page
•Visit related blogs and participate in the discussion. Contribute to communities etc. This will also help to provide targeted backlinks to your site
•Publish a feed for your content to inform readers when its updated
Webmaster tools
•Add your blog to Google webmaster tools and verify it
•Submit a sitemap for your blog. If you publish an Atom or RSS feed, you can submit this URL as the sitemap.
There you have it! Some of these points might seem simple to more advanced bloggers, but in any case it's great to have SEO advice directly from Google!

Google AdWords Option to Show on Desktop/iPhone
Mon, Dec 01 at 04:49 PM
Many advertisers prefer to not show their Google ads to iPhone or mobile users, and there are advertisers who avoid showing their ads to desktop users.Google has finally come out with a solution. It has given a new campaign setting option in AdWords, where you can specify the device platform for which you want to show your ad.

A thread report of Search Engine Watch forums has reported that one user was able to see his ad and opt for their particular account choice. For most of us, it is a feature that will enable us to limit our campaign to a chosen target segment.
To make things easier for advertisers, Google has also added help documentation in this section. The question and answers discussed in it are:
Advertisers are really happy to have better control over their ads. They can now decide, who all can see their ads and on what platform.
Microsoft Search Changing to Kumo?
Mon, Dec 01 at 04:49 PM
The official Microsoft rumor mill went into overdrive this week with speculation that the tech giants search engine was undergoing a re-brand.Liveside, an unofficial Windows Live blog, was first to launch speculation of the potential Microsoft search re-brand. The post suggests Microsoft could be changing Live Search to Kumo which apparently "means 'cloud' or 'spider' in Japanese".
The Liveside blog reported that Microsoft had taken control of the kumo.com domain during the week, and the domain was now pointing to an internal Microsoft test site (for viewing by employees only).
Back in October, Live Search re-branding news was in overdrive with several UI tests being reported and a myriad of leaked screenshots.

Microsoft employees have been fairly open about the Live Search branding issues and the need for a re-think on the matter. There was early reports that they would revert back to Windows Live Search branding as a quick win.
With all the speculation aside, does a re-brand really make much difference in Microsoft's attempts to increase its market share?
It's probably not as critical as getting the algorithm right, or finding a way to rapidly increase adoption, but if they are planning a re-brand, the quicker they get it done the better.
Microsoft wouldn't want to undermine any inroads they make in terms of market share now, by re-branding later and confusing new users.
What do you think of Kumo as a new brand for Microsoft Search? Share your thoughts below.Comments

Google Releases a Competitive Research Tool

Search Newz
The Inside AdWords blog announced the beta launch of Google's Search-based Keyword Tool. ... current page titles and keywords, This shows the % of organic and paid traffic going to a URL.
For any keyword, the Google Search-based Keyword Tool will show up to 800 related keywords with cost and search volume estimates. This tool also works to show you 100 keywords related to a site, and if you own a website they will show you thousands of keywords that they think you could bid on which are not already in your account. In addition they show your search share of voice (via ads and organic search results) for keywords. This data is easy to export using a handy export button.

There are a variety of cool extra filters that can be applied on this tool, including...
•minimum or maximum search volumes
•bid price range
•low, medium, or high competition
•keyword in URL
•combining URL and keywords as filters
•keyword + general category
•negative keywords
Using a variety of different combinations for these filters you can see many different sets of 800 keywords even within the same subset. Export these different lists a variety of times and you can quickly build a list of thousands of high value keywords.
